Effective immediately, Roy Smith will provide advice to private clients while working alongside an investment manager as part of the firm’s ‘two expert’ methodology. He reports to financial planning director Stephen Parker.

Tilney confirmed that there will be further appointments in its London, Liverpool and Glasgow offices as it seeks to capitalise on the post-pensions reforms landscape.

“Our financial planning business is currently undergoing a period of strong growth that reflects the huge number of enquiries the firm is receiving,” said Richard Dawes, Tilney’s managing director of financial planning.

“With the radical shake-up to pensions, demand for sound financial planning advice has never been greater, and appointments like Roy’s ensure that we can provide the superior service our clients expect. We are delighted to welcome him to the team.”

Smith arrives from a wealth management and financial planning berth at RBS Private Clients Group, prior to which he was a senior business development manager with Adam & Company. He has also held senior private banking and financial planning positions with RBS Private Banking and Clydesdale Bank Insurance Brokers respectively.

The appointment represents Tilney’s fourth in four months, following on from Stuart Layzell being announced as the firm’s new chief financial officer in June, financial intermediaries director Mark Coles’ May arrival, and Martin King joining as managing director of investment management in April.

Smith’s arrival also signals the second expansion of Tilney’s Glasgow team in eight months, the first of which was the instalment of investment management senior associate Ross Cullen in October.
