Sustainable investing pioneer Stewart Investors has closed its doors for good after 38 years of active equity investing, according to senior portfolio manager Nick Edgerton.

The business, formerly based in Edinburgh, effectively retired its brand name at the end of last year after parent company First Sentier Group transferred the asset manager’s investment responsibilities to FSSA Investment Managers.

In a post on LinkedIn, Edgerton said: “[The closure] follows two equally surprising and unexpected events last year – first some colleagues suddenly departed, then, three months later the parent company chose to call time on the business.

“Many businesses like to think they are different or pioneering. It felt like Stewart was on the inside, after many years of successful sustainable investment in Asia, the emerging markets, and globally. I’m left with deep gratitude for the many wonderful people I was able to work alongside.”

Edgerton said he would take a break and “reflect” before “getting back into equity investing.”

Stewart Investors has been contacted for further comment.
