Industry pays tribute to Ruli Viljoen

Remembered for being ‘an inspiration’ and ‘much loved’ in the investment industry

The investment industry has been paying tribute to Ruli Viljoen, head of manager selection at Morningstar, who has sadly passed away after a battle with cancer.

Viljoen was remembered for being “an inspiration” and a “highly respected figure” as the industry learned of her passing.

Viljoen spent over two decades building a career in investment fund selection starting at Pavilion Capital as an investment analyst in 2001. She was also a portfolio manager at TriAlpha Investment Management in the mid-2000s, and then joined Morningstar OBSR in 2009 as senior investment analyst. She became head of manager selection at Morningstar in January 2013.

A spokesperson for Morningstar, said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ruli, a much-loved and highly respected figure in our industry. She will be greatly missed by colleagues and clients, and our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.”

Lucy Walker, founder and CEO at AM Insights, paid tribute: “Ruli had been an inspiration to me and so many others. She was straight talking and immensely kind. Ruli made this industry better for a lot of people. We have lost a great one, my thoughts to go her family and friends.”
