The CF Woodford Equity Income fund secured first place in the annual list based on the number of deals completed by The Share Centre’s customers. It was followed by AXA Framlington Biotech fund, Polar Capital Healthcare Opportunities fund, Old Mutual UK Mid-Cap fund and L&G UK Index fund.

“In second and third positions were two funds that are very sector specific and that invested in a broad area. They are also funds that I had personally picked out at the start of 2015 as some of my preferred choices for the year,” said Andy Parsons, head of investment research at The Share Centre. “Focussing on the rapidly changing and evolving developments within both of these sectors, I wouldn’t be surprised if one or both feature regularly again throughout 2016,” he added.

Investing in small to mid-companies is often seen as the heart of the economy and a bell weather as to how strong a recovery is, according to Parsons. “The Old Mutual UK Mid-Cap fund was undoubtedly the preferred option in 2015 for those investors seeking an alternative UK investment to a more traditional UK large cap offering,” he said.

L&G UK Index fund came in at fifth place. “For those investors with very little time on their hands and seeking a lower cost investment, then an index tracker may well be suitable,” commented Parsons.

The bottom five positions were filled by Stewart Investors Asia Pacific Leaders fund, Jupiter India fund, Fundsmith Equity fund, Invesco Perpetual High Income fund and Insight Equity Income Booster fund.
