At a time of economic uncertainty across Europe, research from the global asset manager’s European Wealth Index shows that investors are being more cautious and checking what is happening on a more regular basis.

Of the 10 European countries studied Austrians topped the table, with a quarter of the country’s investors checking their portfolio performance on a daily basis and almost half of them on at least a weekly basis.

Next up were Swedes, followed by Spanish, German and Italian investors.

In sixth place, only 16% of Brits check their investment performance daily, with 32% checking it once a week or more.

Peter Beckett, head of European marketing at Schroders, said: "In Austria the investor is faced with an incredibly volatile stock market, with moves of 3% to 6% on a daily basis. This is because it is a small market and therefore more volatile, so they keep a regular eye on it."

He added that in general investors were being far more vigilant with their portfolios, as everywhere they look there are headlines about the markets.

"Across Europe we continue to see flows driven by clients of IFAs as affluent investors reappraise investment strategies to keep their long-term and retirement goals alive," he explained.

The research was undertaken by YouGov in September 2011 among a representative sample of affluent investors. The sample was defined as people with invested assets, excluding primary residence, of €100,000 (or the equivalent amount).
