Old Mutual Group announced the intention to combine the two asset managers at the end of April, but it is yet to finalise plans for the combined businesses’ name and branding.

Tonkinson joins CEO Julian Ides’ executive committee after nearly 10 years at UBS Global Asset Management, where he was most recently managing director.

Prior to this he held roles at both Fidelity and Prudential.

Under the structure as it currently holds, Ides reports to Paul Feeney, who was made CEO of Old Mutual Wealth Managers last week after he joined the firm from BNY Mellon in January.

In this role he covers Skandia UK, Skandia International, Skandia Investment Group and Old Mutual Asset Managers (UK) and given his background in distribution, for BNY Mellon and prior to that Gartmore, he will play a key role in this side of the business.

Tonkinson said: "I believe there is a tremendous opportunity given its size, scale and presence of this new business in the UK and international markets. The business has significant strength in a number of areas but particularly its investment solutions as well its in-house and outsourced single strategy funds. We have a strong and evolving range of products, therefore I’m naturally pleased to be leading the sales effort for the new business."
