Birch will assist in the analysis of European companies and provide support to both SVM’s European equity and global equity teams.

He used to be a junior portfolio manager with the European mid cap team at BNP Paribas IP and represents the fourth analyst hire for SVM.

The firm said it had invested significantly in its analytical resource in the past eighteen months, in order to support the five fund managers, which include co-founder Margaret Lawson.

Lawson’s UK Growth Fund recently received a gold grading from S&P Capital IQ for its "comfortably top decile performance" in its peer group over five years.

At the same time, the SVM Continental Europe Fund managed by Hugh Cuthbert also received a gold grading.

Colin McLean, managing director, SVM Asset Management, said: "In Alasdair we have recruited a talented investment analyst with excellent knowledge and experience of European markets. The growth of our investment team demonstrates our ongoing commitment to develop our core product areas of UK, European and global equities and enhance our client offering."
