In his previous role Squire focused on diversifying Fidelity’s equity product range by developing unconstrained investment disciplines.
Prior to Fidelity Squire spent 11 years working for UBS and Newton Investment Management, in risk management and portfolio analytics.
At Alliance Trust, he will report directly to Katherine Garrett-Cox, chief executive of the trust.
He will be responsible for overseeing and developing the current investment performance and risk management model for the trust.
Garrett-Cox, said: “Squire joins Alliance Trust at a very exciting time in its long history. His extensive knowledge and wealth of experience in analysing the risk and performance of multi-asset class portfolios will be essential as we work towards the further development of the trust.”
In the past 18 months Garrett-Cox has been under fire for her management style of the trust from activist shareholder Laxey Partners, who owns 1.7% of the £2.1bn trust.
But while Laxey, run by Colin Kingsnorth, has proved to be a thorn in the side of the Garrett-Cox, it has quietened somewhat from its height of activity in the spring where it tried to encourage Aberdeen to make a hostile bid to run the trust.
