Tomas Johansson will join the firm on 1 August, reinforcing the Global I and Global II funds’ ability to target value stocks beyond the mainstream investor radar.

Reporting to lead portfolio manager Knut Gezelius, Johansson will be working alongside the existing Global team, which comprises Chris Tommy-Simonsen and Soren Milo Christensen.

Johasson joins as the funds emerge from a four-year period of underperformance against sector average, with both picking up in the past six months. The funds have been available to UK institutional investors since February 2013.

The appointment follows the re-hiring of former Global funds manager Filip Weintraub, who left Skagen in 2010 but returned to manage a new concentrated equities fund in January.

Gezelius said: “Johansson has impressive credentials and a deep understanding of analysing investment opportunities, two of many attributes that promise to be of benefit to our clients.”

He arrives from a seven-year position overseeing an equities portfolio at activist fund manager Cevian Capital.
