Phukan will initially be based in the London office, but will be responsible for developing the firm’s international business.

In his previous role Phukan was market head for a number of Barclays Wealth businesses in the EMEA region and prior to this he worked at Goldman Sachs as an executive director.

Nathalie Dauriac-Stoebe, CEO of Signia Wealth and Phukan’s direct report, said: "Sonjoy’s appointment marks an important stage in our international expansion plans. We are excited to utilise his industry expertise to target overseas markets with the same tailored wealth management solutions that have contributed to our success so far in the UK."

But the hire is not the first time Signia Wealth has aimed for international expansion, as back in October 2011 Shalini Khemka was hired with the responsibility of developing the group’s private equity arm and "co-ordinating the international expansion of the business".

Khemka was also to be based in London and work with director Spencer Moulton and Dauriac-Stoebe in building an overseas presence.

She has since left the firm (in March 2012) and her role on the private equity side is being looked after by Moulton.
