Ardevora’s William Pattison and Troy Asset Management founder Sebastian Lyon are among the seven managers making their respective debuts in FE Fundinfo’s hall of fame.
To appear on the list, currently 51-storng, managers must obtain and hold an Alpha Manager rating from FE Fundinfo for at least seven years.
The rating is based on:
- – Risk-adjusted alpha
- – Consistency of outperformance versus their benchmark
- – Outperformance in both up and down markets
“Fund managers are ranked according to their track records since 2000, with extra weighting applied to those with longer track records to highlight the benefits of their experience in delivering strong performance in a range of market conditions,” FE Fundinfo explained.
February saw a considerable cull of FE’s Alpha Managers, with Lindsell Train co-founder Michael Lindsell one of the 52 names dropping off the list.
Challenges and market rotations
Of the 200 active managers to secure an Alpha Rating this year, 51 have passed the seven-year mark, warranting inclusion in the hall of fame.
Charles Younes, research manager at FE Investments, said: “Given that out of the last seven years two have been marked by extreme volatility in the wake of the Covid pandemic and subsequent rises in inflation and interest rates, the 51 managers on the hall of fame have performed outstandingly well to navigate these challenges and market rotations.
“Navigating these changing markets and wider economic events has been a constant feature of the alpha managers and for the most experienced managers they have been able to do so successfully for years, if not decades.”
The newest names in the hall of fame are:
Fund Manager | Company |
William Pattisson | Ardevora Asset Management |
Sebastian Lyon | Troy Asset Management |
Clive Hexton | Rathbones |
William Lock | Morgan Stanley |
Tom Holl | Blackrock |
Yu Zhang | Matthews Asia |

Of the current crop of 51 hall of famers, 10 have remained on the list since they made their respective debuts.
This year marks the final appearance of Marlborough’s Giles Hargreave, however, following his retirement.
