Hogg joins the bank on 1 July and will be responsible for all aspects of its day-to-day management, including human resources, finance, property and IT.

Her appointment was made by incoming governor Mark Carney, who will start his new job on the same day.

She joins the bank from Santander UK, where she was head of retail distribution and intermediaries. In a statement, CEO Ana Botin commended Hogg’s commitment to public service and praised her for re-shaping its retail distribution business.

Existing team members will fill the void left by Hogg’s departure.

Botín said: “Martin Bischoff will continue with his responsibilities for the branch network including Business Banking and Select but will also assume responsibility for Telephony and Digital.

"Miguel Sard will assume direct responsibility for all mortgage channels.

"The Bank of England will benefit greatly from Charlotte’s intelligence, world-class analytical skills, and management experience."

Last week deputy governor Paul Tucker stepped down after 30 years at the bank to pursue academia in the US.
