Chief executive at SWIP Dean Buckley, fixed income director Mark Connolly, real estate director Lynda Shillaw and global equity director Will Low will be leaving the company in the wake of the restructuring.

As part of re-aligning the investment division, the alternatives division will become a standalone unit, with head of alternatives Andrew McCaffery continuing to lead it. He is responsible for all alternatives globally, including hedge funds, private equity, infrastructure and property multi-manager. The joint venture Aberdeen SVG will remain outside of this.

Meanwhile the solutions division, which formerly also harboured the alternatives division, will be led by Archie Struthers, previously managing director of investment solutions at SWIP.  The unit is an independent open-architecture business with responsibility for a range of investment strategies spanning multiple asset classes and risk profiles.

Additionally, a new quantitative investments unit has been created under the leadership of Sean Phayre, formerly director of quantitative investments at SWIP. The quantitative investments team focuses predominantly on market cap passive equity portfolios.

“The creation and enlargement of these units further emphasises the breadth of Aberdeen’s investment capabilities. Alternatives, investment solutions and quant equity can all play important roles in delivering a diversified range of returns to clients,” Aberdeen’s chief executive Martin Gilbert said.

All three divisions will be members of Aberdeen’s group management board. Aberdeen’s three other investment divisions – active equities, fixed income and property – continue to be led by Hugh Young, Brad Crombie and Pertti Vanhanen, respectively. Mandy Pike, Aberdeen’s global head of dealing, has also joined the board.
