Following the pain of 2007 and the sub-prime-led global financial crisis, US consumers as well as the mortgage market learned plenty of lessons. Consumers are far better placed nearly a decade on and the residential mortgage market is far healthier – gone are the days of securities backed by sub-prime assets.
This combination helps to reinforce the investment idea of mortgage-backed securities, with new issuance into a $7trn market of far superior quality than securities issued ahead of 2007.
