A young, charismatic, centrist politician sweeping to power to waves of enthusiastic crowds – it’s no wonder that newspapers have proclaimed Emmanuel Macron the “French Tony Blair”.

As with Blair before him, Macron has shown he certainly knows how to charm the media, though whether his political career will have a similar long-term impact remains to be seen. 

Until last year’s EU Referendum, 1997’s UK general election, at 71%, was the last national vote where turnout exceeded 70%. 

Yesterday’s participation rate of 75% was actually the lowest turnout for a French presidential election since 1969.

The French are historically keener than most to embrace political change, but they rightly maintain the highest of expectations.
