Nick Hornby: Three investment trends for the next 35 years

Video: Cerno Capital founder on the opportunities in alternative protein, blockchain and space

Cerno Capital co-founder Nick Hornby is backing alternative protein, blockchain and space exploration as the top themes for investing over the next 35 years.

In the latest Portfolio Adviser video above, Hornby outlines why he thinks these three areas will drive technological innovation over the next 25-35 years – and at a greater scale than the invention of the internet.

First, Hornby says the evolution of meat substitutes and alternative proteins will make traditional farming “obsolete” as people start to find these methods unpalatable. He adds the development of lab grown and plant-based protein will become the norm, with companies like Nestle already tapping into this trend.

Next, he touches on why blockchain technology has the potential to be “completely transformative for the financial system” through its use in, for example, settling derivatives trades.

Finally, he explains the appeal of investing in space, noting how the falling cost of sending satellites into orbit is set to revolutionise the production of data that drives certain industries on earth. He names Elon Musk’s Starlink as an example of this. Cerno likes the Seraphim Space investment trust as a way of accessing this theme.
