William Hackett is to retire as chief executive of Matthews Asia on 30 June, succeeded by Cooper Abbott (pictured).

Abbott brings more than two decades of experience to the role, having founded and built global multi-boutique asset management company Carillon Tower Advisers.

He served as president and chairman of the company up until February of this year.

Hackett’s retirement was announced in December 2021. He joined the investment manager in 2007 as president, stepping up to the CEO role two years later.

Prior to joining Matthews Asia, Hackett was a partner with the global investment management practice of Deloitte & Touche where he led the US Pacific Southwest investment management practice.

He will continue to advise Matthews Asia during the transition period.

Chris Carey, chair of the board of directors, thanked Hackett “for his substantial achievements” during his 13 years leading the firm and wished him well in his retirement.

He added: “We are pleased to appoint Cooper Abbott as Matthew Asia’s next CEO. Following a thorough search to identify a successor, the board believes Cooper’s deep knowledge of the investment management industry, together with his proven strategic and operational leadership experience, will drive further innovation and growth at the firm.”

Abbott added: “I am delighted to join Matthews Asia and honoured to serve as the firm’s next CEO. I have long admired its unique value proposition, with deep investment expertise in the emerging markets, strong fundamental research capabilities and commitment to delivering outstanding client service.

“I look forward to leading the talented group of professionals at the firm and building on its 30-year heritage of helping clients achieve their investment goals, while delivering significant growth opportunities and value for our clients, employees and shareholders.”
