Manulife IM strengthens emerging markets team with dual appointment

Investment management division has appointed a senior investment analyst and portfolio manager

Manulife Investment Management has appointed Bryony Deuchars to its emerging markets equity strategies, while Talib Saifee is being promoted to portfolio manager.

The firm, which manages over $90bn in assets under management, said that the appointments will meet the anticipated demand for the asset class, as well as the firm’s growth strategy.

Deuchars, who has over 20 years’ experience will serve as a senior investment analyst and managing director.

Most recently, she served as a global emerging markets portfolio manager for Mirabaud Asset Management. She has also worked in various roles at Aviva Investors and Schroders.

Elsewhere, senior investment analyst Talib Saifee has been promoted to portfolio manager. He will join senior portfolio managers Kathryn Langridge and Philip Ehrmann. Prior to this, he was an analyst and fund manager at HSBC.

Ehrmann said: “Since joining our team, Talib has been an excellent contributor to our investment process.”

“His appointment to the portfolio management team underscores the strength and depth of talent we have built. It also exemplifies the multigenerational structure we have crafted to ensure long-term continuity of our time-tested investment philosophy for our clients.”

The emerging markets equity team was formed in 2014, when Langridge and Ehrmann joined the firm from Jupiter Asset Management.

Manulife Investment Management global head of public markets Christopher Conkey said: “This announcement, along with our recent appointment of Endre Pedersen as chief investment officer for global emerging market fixed income, highlights our commitment to providing the highest level of service to our clients in these asset classes.”

He adds that the firm is “well positioned” to deliver strong results in Asia which is an important and “growing segment” for investors.
