This marks Edwards return to the front line since retiring from his long-held role as sales and marketing director at Baillie Gifford in February 2011. However, he also runs K Search, the investment management arm of City head-hunting firm GAAPS.

Edwards has a dual role in helping Calculus grow its business and widening the appeal of EIS investing.

Susan McDonald, Calculus Capital’s executive chairman, praised his vast knowledge of the investment world, particularly the intermediary sector.

“Ken’s arrival demonstrates our serious commitment to the wealth manager and IFA markets, areas where we are experiencing a significant degree of new business growth,” she said.

Under current UK legislation, EIS investors benefit from income tax relief at 30%; no CGT paid on funds and CGT deferral; 100% IHT relief; and loss relief up to 50% of net investment after income tax relief of 30%.
