Toby Hayes, co-founder of Armstrong Investment Management, has joined Franklin Templeton to lead the firm’s UK multi-asset capability his third appointment in four years.

Hayes departed Armstrong Investment Management just over a year after he set the firm up alongside Ana Cukic Armstrong and Patrick Armstrong.

The trio had worked at Insight Investment as multi-managers and built Armstrong Investment Management using the same multi-asset approach to fund management.

Between Armstrong Investment Management and Franklin Templeton Hayes worked at Pacific Real Estate Capital with former CIO of Hermes Real Estate Alternatives, Steven Grahame.

The pair was charged with growing Pacific Real Estate Capital’s alternatives business to capitalise on investors’ growing demand for investing in non-traditional, more liquid real estate investment.

Hayes developed and co-managed Pacific’s Liquid Property Fund, described as the first Ucits IV multi-asset property fund of its kind by Franklin Templeton.

Since its March 2009 inception date Pacific’s Liquid Property Fund has returned 43.5% compared with 24.9% from its benchmark – the IPD UK PPFI Other Balanced Funds Index. It has also beaten the benchmark significantly over three, six, 12 and 24 months.

In his new role as vice president and portfolio manager for Franklin Templeton’s Multi-Asset Strategies and will be responsible for developing and managing UK dedicated multi-asset strategies.

Ian Wilkins, Franklin Templeton’s UK country head, said: “Hayes is a talented multi-asset portfolio manager with a strong performance track record, and experience across both traditional and alternative asset classes.

“He brings further investment expertise to Franklin Templeton’s global multi-asset strategies team, who currently manage £19bn.”
