As well as working on the expansion of the firm’s institutional business, particularly in the US, he will be named as co-manager on David Smith’s GAM Diversity Institutional strategy.
Smith said: “Institutions are set to become our largest client group in funds of hedge funds, and their need for customised solutions remains an important growth driver. We are committed to further expanding our position in this market, especially in the US – the largest market for institutional investment in the world.”
Despite his global client base, Lawler will be based in London.
He joined from Man Group where he was head of portfolio management, prior to which he was head of hedge fund research at Glenwood Capital Investments, joining the firm in 2002, until it merged with Man Group’s alternative business in 2008.
Before joining Glenwood, Lawler was a sell-side equity research analyst.
