The Financial Conduct Authority has appointed Sheldon Mills to serve as its new director of competition.

The UK regulator said Mills will be a central figure in promoting competition in consumers’ interests, which it has placed an increasing emphasis on. In his role for the FCA, he will deliver market studies, like those currently going on in the mortgage and wholesale insurance brokerage space, and be involved in anti-competition enforcement matters.

Mills will join the UK regulator from the Competition and Markets Authority where he is currently a senior director responsible for the delivery of UK merger control across the economy. He was also behind the design and implementation of the new UK State Aid regime.

Before becoming a senior director in 2014, he held a directorship at the CMA’s predecessor, the Office of Fair Trading. Mills is a qualified solicitor who has practiced competition and anti-trust law in firms across the City, including SJ Berwin, Jones Day and K&L Gates.

“In Sheldon we are getting an undisputed expert in competition law and policy,” said Christopher Woolard, executive director of strategy and competition.

“I know that Sheldon will continue the ground-breaking and vital work the FCA has done since it was given a competition remit, to deliver markets that deliver for consumers.”

Mills will take up the role in November.
