Double departure sees Gam multi asset and discretionary bosses exit

As the asset manager picks BlueBay AM alum for global head of investment role

Two senior departures have been announced at Gam, with Anthony Lawler, head of Systematics and the multi-asset businesses, leaving along with Greg Clerkson, head of discretionary investments.

The firm said they had decided “to take the opportunity to move on from Gam and leave with our thanks”.

No details further details were provided.

Group chief executive Peter Sanderson (pictured) said: “I would like to thank Anthony and Greg for their significant contributions to putting Gam on track for growth and they leave with our best wishes.”

The departures come a month after Gam was forced to adjust its profit targets after assets dropped by £18bn. Its Systematic range, which encompasses its quantitative hedge funds, was hit by was hit by CHF 1.7bn (£1.3bn) of net redemptions in 2021, worse than any other asset class apart from fixed income (-CHF 2.3bn).

Two departures, one hire and a promotion

Gam also announced that it has hired Bluebay Asset Management partner and co-CIO David Dowsett as global head of investment.

He brings more than 30 years’ experience to the firm, having spent 18 years at Bluebay Asset Management, latterly as co-chief investment officer.

Reporting to Sanderson, he will be responsible for leading the firm’s investment teams.

Dowsett will “provide strong leadership for our investment teams in the next phase of our growth strategy”, Gam said.

In addition to his appointment, global head of trading Juan Landazabal will be promoted to head of investment platform. He will report to Dowsett.

Sanderson added: “I am delighted that David is joining Gam, he brings with him a wealth of experience and he will provide strong leadership for our investment teams as we deliver for our clients and grow the firm.

Dowsett said: “I am very excited to be joining Gam at this point in its strategic transformation. The management team has built a robust platform for growth, and I aim to help the firm capitalise on recent strong investment performance.

“Gam will always be an investment firm with no ‘house view’ but I believe my track record of investment expertise and experience of building commercially viable investment products can contribute to the success of the firm in meeting its strategic goals.”

Last week the Swiss manager announced it had hired Guglielmo Mazzola as a senior investment specialist for its Systematic team.
