Barker joined Old Mutual last week, having previously been Société Générale’s head of European Credit Research.
He has worked in credit research for over 20 years having also held roles at Aviva Investors and Lazard Asset Management.
“This is an important appointment for us as it signals our intent to compete with the larger players in the corporate bond market and to offer a credible alternative to what has become a space where too much money is concentrated in too few hands,” said Cowley.
Old Mutual’s credit range comprises Cowley’s £758m Global Strategic Bond Fund, and the £474 Corporate Bond Fund and £37m Dynamic Bond Fund, both managed by Christine Johnson.
