Effective immediately, Don Smith takes up the newly-created role of deputy CIO as part of the firm’s third party funds team.

Reporting to CIO Kevin Doran at Brown Shipley’s Manchester office, Smith will have a hand in developing the group’s alternative assets and FX capabilities while also occupying a seat on the local asset allocation committee.

Paul Spann also arrives at the company’s Manchester branch, taking its private client director count to 16 in total.

Working under Jonathan Sherlock, head of the Manchester office, Spann’s appointment boosts Brown Shipley’s regulated and non-regulated mortgage, investment-secured and commercial real estate-secured lending capabilities.

“I am delighted to have someone of Smith’s calibre join our investment management team,” said Doran.

“Not only does he bring invaluable experience, but I am confident he can help provide different perspectives and new insight to a team that prides itself on taking a fresh approach to investment management.”

Smith joins Brown Shipley from a 14-year chief economist berth with ICAP, while Spann was formerly associate director private banker at Coutts & Co following private and commercial banking roles with HSBC.
