In total seven individuals have been poached by BlackRock, whom have overseen a growing book of business and managed several top performing funds in both EM external and local debt mandates for BNP Paribas, BlackRock said.
The team will be based in London, but BlackRock is yet to announce when they will start at the company.
Peter Fisher, senior managing director and head of fixed income at BlackRock, said: "Emerging debt markets offer attractive growth opportunities and are a key focus area for our clients and BlackRock.
"When they join BlackRock, the new EM debt team led by Sergio, will play a major role in further building out our emerging debt capabilities and positioning BlackRock to service our clients effectively."
Trigo-Paz has over 17 years’ experience in EM fixed income and prior to joining BNP Paribas worked as a proprietary trader at a subsidiary of Banca Intesa in Paris and as a market maker in EM sovereign and corporate bonds at ANZ.
At present, Blackrock head of the emerging markets debt team Imran Hussain is supported by emerging market debt portfolio manager Daniel Shaykevich.
It is unclear what will happen to these roles once the new team join.
