Henderson saw five newcomers join the latest listing as fixed income star duo John Pattullo and Jenna Barnard were lauded alongside absolute return experts Ben Wallace and Luke Newman. Asian equity manager John Crawford completed the group's list.

Meanwhile veteran names such as Tom Dobell at M&G Investments and Neptune Asset Management's Robin Geffen were stripped of the accolade.

Other newcomers to the list of rated managers included Marcus Brookes from Schroders (formerly Cazenove), Kames Capital's Iain Buckle and Douglas Brodie at Baillie Gifford.

FE's Alpha Managers, named from the top 10 per cent of managers running retail funds available in the UK, are recognised for consistent outperformance over their careers, regardless of whether their time has spanned different fund management groups.

Managers must have a minimum track record of 42 months and manage at least one fund with over £25m in assets.  If they co-manage three or more funds, then at least one of those funds must have over £30m under management.

"Especially impressive are the 35 managers who have consistently achieved a rating for each of the past six years, excelling through different market conditions from the downturn of 2008 to last year's bull market," Rob Gleeson, head of research at FE, commented.

Alpha Manager veterans include M&G bond guru Richard Woolnough, Schroders duo Andy Brough and Jenny Jones, Angus Tulloch and Martin Lau of First State Investments and Jupiter's Merlin trio of John Chatfeild-Roberts, Algy Smith-Maxwell and Peter Lawery.
