Slater will continue in his role of joint manager of the £3.6 billion Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust, which he has managed alongside James Anderson since 2009. Robinson will retain a leading role within the team and continue to manage the Baillie Gifford American fund.

John MacDougall, will move into Slater’s vacant seat on the long-term global growth team. As announced on Friday, this means he will leave the Global Discovery team and relinquish management of the Shin Nippon Investment trust, to be replaced by Praveen Kumar.

Charles Plowden, joint senior partner, Baillie Gifford, said: “Tom Slater’s appointment underlines our commitment to building a world class North American Equities team, and will also ensure that this group maintains close ties with our global strategies.”

Slater joined Baillie Gifford in 2000 and worked in the developed Asian and UK equity teams before joining Scottish Mortgage as Deputy Manager in 2009. He became a partner in the firm in 2012.

The Baillie Gifford American fund is the group’s main dedicated North American retail fund, though US equities form a relatively large part of a number of the group’s global trusts. The fund has had a strong 12 months, now sitting 9th out of 117 funds in the sector over one year. Robinson took over the fund in April 2014.
