Hayes already runs the AXA Sterling Strategic Bond Fund, which he took over from Julie Lamirel on joining AXA IM in June 2010.

He will get help to run the new global strategic bond offering from chief investment officer and senior bond strategist, Chris Iggo, who he reports into.

AXA IM has an expansive fixed income range, with eight variations of sterling bond funds, a Global High Income Fund, Pan European High Yield Bond Fund and a US Short Duration High Yield Fund.

Theodora Zemek heads up the fixed income team of 90, which has €273bn under management (as at 30 June).

Typically, global strategic bond funds invest across the spectrum of debt from high yield to investment grade and corporate to government bonds.

Hayes was previously at New Star/Henderson New Star, where he had been a senior fund manager in the fixed interest team from 2003.

His Sterling Strategic Bond Fund is up 7.9% in the year to 30 September, compared to benchmark returns of 8.6% over the same period.
