Asset Value Investors (AVI) has hired Shuntaro Shimizu as an investment analyst to focus on Japan.

Shimizu (pictured), who is based in London, will conduct research for AVI’s £182.3m Japan Opportunities Trust, as well as the firm’s £1.2bn Global Trust.

Prior to joining AVI, Shimizu spent three years as a manager at global consulting firm Bain & Company. He was also an associate at the Bank of Japan for five years.

Joe Bauernfreund, chief executive officer and chief investment officer of AVI, said: “We are pleased to welcome Shuntaro to our growing Japan team. His appointment reinforces our commitment and long-standing ambition in this space.

“The ever-improving corporate governance landscape in Japan plays well to our strength in engagement, enabling us to help companies unlock shareholder value. I am confident that Shuntaro’s insights will enable him to make a significant contribution to our future success and will enable AVI to accelerate our expansion in Japan, an important focus market for us.“

In July, AVI hired fund manager Charlotte Cuthbertson from Premier Miton. She will manage her previous investment company, MIGO Opportunities Trust, when it moves across to the firm’s management in Q4 this year.
