In its 2013 class of alpha managers, 177 ranked among the best 10% of all unit trust, Oeic and investment trust managers in the UK.

Among this total, FE said 45 managers had achieved an alpha manager rating each year since they were launched in 2009, so for five consecutive years.

The investment fund ratings and analysis provider scored managers on three components: risk-adjusted alpha; outperformance of their benchmark; and the consistency of outperformance or underperformance in all market conditions.

Each manager is judged on their track records from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2012, regardless of the number of investment houses they have worked for.

The ratings firm gives extra weighting to managers with lengthy track records, which means they have experienced a variety of different market conditions. They must have a minimum track record of 36 months to be rated.

Matt Surfleet, commercial director at FE, said: “FE Alpha Managers represent an elite group of investment professionals who have been able to demonstrate consistent returns across their careers. We congratulate these 177 managers who have achieved this accolade. In particular, those managers who have enjoyed the title of FE Alpha Manager for five years running show a rare talent for being able to generate results on behalf of their investors through some of the most challenging markets in memory.”
