Adrian Gosden’s Gam UK Equity Income fund has picked up an Elite rating from Fundcalibre after passing its three-year track record.

Gosden’s (pictured) £198.4m fund was among seven funds, including one investment trust, to bag the top accolade in the research agency’s latest ratings round-up.

It joined Brown Advisory US Flexible Equity in moving from Fundcalibre’s ‘Radar’ to its Elite category of funds.

Gosden’s fund rebounds sharply from Covid lows

Gam UK Equity Income, which Gosden launched in October 2017 after joining from Artemis, invests across the cap spectrum from Aim-listed companies to the FTSE 100 giants.

Like all UK equity income funds Gosden’s fund struggled in 2020 as most corporates cancelled or slashed dividend payments to cushion the blow from the coronavirus pandemic.

However, it has rebounded strongly in the last year as payouts have resumed, returning 46.4% versus the IA UK Equity Income 29.7% average. Over three years the fund is in the second quartile, returning 12.7% compared to the average fund’s 10.4%.

Fundcalibre research director Juliet Schooling Latter noted Gosden targets a higher yield than the UK stock market but is also looking for “steady dividend growth”.

Gam UK Equity Income has a historic yield of 3.7%, according to its latest factsheet. Top holdings include BP, Lloyds and tobacco firm Imperial Brands.

Artemis scoops up three ratings

Five other funds also received the coveted Elite rating in Fundcalibre’s recent round-up.

Global equity funds, Capital Group New Perspective and Gam Star Disruptive Growth, made the cut, as did the SVM UK Opportunities fund and FSSA All China fund.

The Mid Wynd International Investment Trust, run by Artemis trio Alex Illingworth, Rosanna Bucheri and Simon Edelsten, also bagged the top rating.

Artemis also scooped up two Elite Radar badges for its Positive Future and Target Return Bond funds which do not have long enough track records to qualify for a rating yet. The latter fund is co-managed by former Kames bond lead Stephen Snowden and Juan Valenzuela and has amassed £125.6m since launching in December 2019.
