Brett has decided to leave Aberdeen on a full time basis to pursue a different career path; however, he will continue his involvement with the group as a non-executive director of Aberdeen Asset Management Life and Pensions.

Brett will remain in the business until the end of the calendar year to help the transition process. Avril McLean, chief operating officer – distribution, supported by members of the senior management, team, will coordinate distribution activity around the world in the interim.

Brett joined Aberdeen in 2011 as part of the group’s takeover of Scottish Widows Investment Partnership, where he had been head of distribution. He had previously worked at Aberdeen as head of legal, leaving in 2003.

Martin Gilbert said: “John has done a fantastic job for us, particularly in integrating the acquisition of SWIP. I am delighted that he will continue to work with us, initially as a non-executive director on the Life and Pensions board. I am sure that, given time, other opportunities will develop where John can potentially play a significant role. In the meantime, the board of AAM wishes John and his family well”

John Brett said: “I am excited by the opportunity to develop my career in a direction that will sustain my relationship with Aberdeen while leaving me free to explore other new avenues that interest me.”

It has been a tough year for Aberdeen as the weakness in emerging markets has hit funds flows, with the firm’s assets under management at £307.3bn, as of 30 June.
