Glyn Barker (pictured), the firm’s chair designate, has stepped down from its board due to personal reasons, Quilter has announced. Current chair Ruth Markland will continue in the role as a result.

Barker was named Markland’s replacement on 30 May 2022 and was due to take up the mantle once regulatory approval had been secured. Barker said back in May that he was “deeply honoured” to be approved as the next chair, and had left his role on the board of Berkeley Group to pursue the opportunity.

Due to the unspecified personal reasons, however, he is unable to succeed Markland, who has been chair since early May. She said that, although the board was disappointed by Barker’s decision, it “very much [understood] his personal reasons for making it”.

She added: “We thank Glyn for his contribution to the board over the last several months and he leaves with our very best wishes. I am looking forward to continuing as chair of Quilter and thank my board colleagues for their support and confidence.”

Tim Breedon, a senior independent director at the firm, said: “I share Ruth’s disappointment at Glyn’s decision, but similarly understand his reasons and wish him the very best. On behalf of the board, I would like to extend our thanks to Ruth for agreeing to continue her chairmanship of Quilter. She has provided excellent leadership since becoming chair after our last AGM and has made an invaluable contribution to the board and broader company since our listing in June 2018.”

Markland has spent more than a decade on the boards of Standard Chartered and Sage Group, and was also a non-executive director at Deloitte for five years until May 2020.
