James de Sausmarez will retire as Janus Henderson’s director and head of investment trusts on 30 June 2022.
Dan Howe (pictured), deputy head of investment trusts will succeed him. They are working together to ensure a smooth transition, the firm said.
Howe joined Janus Henderson Investors in October 2021 from JP Morgan Asset Management where, between 2018 and 2021, he was executive director for global strategic relationships. He had previously been part of their investment trust business for five years, latterly as head of sales.
Sausmarez has led Janus’ investment trust business since 2005 and has a long history with group, having first joined Touche Remnant, a Henderson legacy firm, in January 1986.
On his retirement, Sausmarez will concentrate on his civic and voluntary interests as well as seek non-executive opportunities.
Second senior departure
Janus Henderson’s investment trust division is its oldest business. Among its strategies are The Bankers Investment Trust, Henderson Far East Income Trust and The City of London Investment Trust, which holds the record for the longest period of consecutive annual dividend increases having increased its dividend every year since 1966.
News of Sausmarez’s departure comes as Janus Henderson Investors prepares to bid farewell to its chief executive Dick Weil, who is set to retire at the end of March after 12 years at the company.
Weil said: “The Investment Trust business is Janus Henderson’s oldest and remains a core business for us, where our client Investment Trusts continue to lead the market. I want to thank James for his exceptional service to our company and I wish him well in his retirement; I know that with Dan, James is leaving the business in excellent hands.”
