Xavier Rolet will step down from his role as chief executive of the London Stock Exchange Group by December 2018 after nine years at the helm of the organisation.

Rolet joined the stock exchange from Lehman Brothers in 2009. Under his leadership, the market capitalisation of the LSE has risen from £800m to nearly £14bn currently.

The LSE board confirmed it is in the process of finding a successor and will work closely with Rolet to “ensure a smooth transition process”.

Commenting on his future departure, Rolet said: “I am extremely proud of all we have done together in just under a decade to turn LSEG into a truly global financial market infrastructure group.

“I would also like to thank the Board and our shareholders for supporting this strategy. Establishing relevance and leadership in a consolidating global industry cannot be achieved without taking certain risks and making bold moves.”

Chairman Donald Bryson added: “I am delighted that Xavier will remain as CEO and continue to lead the company until his successor is appointed. LSEG remains well positioned for the opportunities ahead and remains confident of delivering further success and value for shareholders.”

Elsewhere, the firm released its third quarter update, reporting 18% higher revenues of £443m and a 17% rise in total income to £486m.

Shares in the LSEG were down slightly from the previous close, trading at £38.98p per share.
