Gambi previously worked for Henderson 13 years ago as head of equities and fixed income, but left due to ill-health, taking three years away from the industry. He has known Henderson chief executive Andrew Formica since 1995.

His role will be to develop the investment strategy of the business globally. Formica said: "(Gambi’s) global knowledge is a critical attraction to us as we continue the development of our international businesses including a greater number of our investment professionals residing in locations outside of our London office. We have laid strong foundations over the past few years by streamlining and simplifying the business.

he result is that we are focused on our core strengths in global and European equities, absolute return, multi-asset and global fixed income. With the current momentum in the business, and with Rob’s help, we are well set for our next phase of growth."

John Dugenske replaced Gambi as global head of fixed income at UBS Global Asset Management. Gambi had been at the firm for seven years. He had no direct fund management responsibilities, but oversaw $230bn in assets.

Gambi will start in 2014 and will report directly to Formica.
