Whitehead has been a partner and head of equity income at Sarasin. He will join his new firm in the fourth quarter of the year.

With its equity income assets having reached £517m Martin Currie has restructured resources and created a stand-alone team. This team will also include portfolio managers Alan Porter, Ross Watson and David Forsyth.

Whitehead will report to the group’s head of investment John Pickard, and be based in Martin Currie’s Edinburgh headquarters. He has over 17 years industry experience.

“Martin Currie was one of the founder members of the IMA global equity income sector and while the sector is among the youngest in the industry, it is also one of the fastest growing,” said Pickard. “Mark has an outstanding track record of running global equity income strategies and his appointment will significantly deepen our resource and help us to build upon this growing asset class as we strive to establish ourselves as a fund provider of choice in this area.”

“The company has a deeply resourced, experienced and impressive investment team and I look forward to joining the business to bring together all the equity income resources and lead the newly formed team,” said Whitehead.
