In its latest AGM statement released this morning, group chairman Douglas Flint spoke of a requirement to “ring fence” in the UK and so a new location may be sought as part of a broader strategic review.

“The board has therefore now asked management to commence work to look at where the best place is for HSBC to be headquartered in this new environment,” he said.

“The question is a complex one and it is too soon to say how long this will take or what the conclusion will be; but the work is underway.”

Formed in 1991, HSBC Holdings’ Canary Wharf offices were officially opened in April 2003.

Speculation suggests that HSBC could relocate back to Hong Kong, where the bank was founded back in 1865.
