Thompson, a former founder and chief executive of Source ETF, will be based in London reporting to Michael Crinieri, global head of Goldman Sachs Asset Management’s ETF business.
He has more than 17 years’ experience in the ETF industry. During his time at Source ETF he developed the firm’s ETF range and established it as a prominent provider in Europe before it was sold to Invesco in 2016.
Prior to that, Thompson spent more than 10 years at Goldman Sachs in various trading roles in its securities division.
The move is part of GSAM’s push into the European ETF market on the back of client demand and the lure of Europe as a rapidly-growing market.
GSAM is aiming to build on the success of its US ETF business and it is understood the firm will offer similar ETFs for European clients in the first half of 2019.
Nick Phillips, head of the international retail client business for GSAM, said: “We see strong demand in this category and are excited to bring an innovative and cost-efficient suite of products to European clients.
“This offering will complement our global, broad and deep expertise across asset classes and builds on the success of our fast-growing US ETF business. Peter brings decades of experience and has been a pioneer in the European ETF market.”
