Global fund assets swell in 2012

Investment fund assets increased 11% during 2012 reaching 22.17trn by the end of the year according to data provided by the European Fund and Asset Mangement Association (EFAMA).

Equity assets accounted for over a third, 37%, of the total, while just under a quarter, 24%, was invested in bonds. Money market and balanced/mixed asset funds accounted for 16% and 11% respectively.

All fund types registered inflows during the Q4 2012, but while equities and money market funds saw a turnaround in fortune from net outflows to net inflows, balanced funds saw net inflows drop €5bn in the last few months of the year from €38bn to €33bn.

In terms of market share, the US accounted for just under half, 49%, of assets and Europe, 28%. Australia, Brazil and Canada accounted for 5.7%, 5.5% and 3.6% respectively.
