He takes up what is a newly-created role in September and will report to the firm’s Asia chief investment officer, Wilfred Sit who himself joined Barings at the end of May this year.

Argal joins from Birla Sunlife AMC where he was head of offshore equities as well as manager of the India Advantage Fund and Excel India Fund. He has more than 17 years experience in the industry having also worked at UTI AMC with responsibility for managing a number of Indian equity funds.

“We believe that India represents a strong long-term growth story,” commented Sit. “Domestically, India’s fast-growing middle income class is driving a boom for consumer goods, while demand for housing and financial services is likely to remain strong for many years to come as the pace of urbanisation accelerates.”
