The quarterly survey questioned 103 respondents and revealed that although sentiment was down, many firms had plans to raise investment and step up hiring.

Rain Newton-Smith, CBI chief economist, said: “Despite feeling uncertain about the near future, it’s encouraging to see the financial services sector charting a steady course, with firms expecting to raise investment and step up the pace of hiring, while continuing to deliver improvements to the bottom line.”

He added businesses will welcome the ambition to create a more prosperous and open Britain with free trade between the UK and EU and said business “stands ready to support” Brexit negotiations by ensuring the “economic case is heard loud and clear” in order to secure the best deal for the UK.
