Hyde-Smith joins from John Duffield’s firm, Brompton Asset Management, which was launched in 2009, the same year Duffield sold his struggling New Star Asset Management business to Henderson Global Investors and nine years after the multi-millionaire parted ways with the company he founded, Jupiter Fund Management.
While at Brompton, Hyde-Smith engineered the collective investment selection process and was responsible for managing a variety of multi-asset strategies. Before that, he was a fund analyst at New Star AM and SG Private Bank.
The appointment comes shortly after Royal London Asset Management nabbed a trio of senior global equities managers from Waverton in a move to offer its own equities solutions this year.
“Luke will be an excellent complementary fit with our team in this newly-created role,” remarked Waverton director and head of managed portfolio service John Bellamy. “He brings a great deal of experience and has extensive knowledge in sourcing new investment opportunities, formulating asset class views and carrying out research and manager due diligence.”
Hyde-Smith said Waverton’s “excellent pedigree” and “highly regarded team” were both convincing reasons to join the London-head quartered wealth manager with £5.1bn in assets under management.
“They have established a robust collective research process,” he elaborated, “and I look forward to adding my experience and playing a part in its ongoing evolution as the company continues to grow its market proposition.”
