Merrifield has joined from Legal & General Investmant Management where he led the fund manager selection team and ran a range of fund of funds models. He now leads a 13-strong investment team.

The wealth manager has also recruited Lee Clark from Arbuthnot Latham to head up a “satellite operation” in Eastbourne, which is part of its ongoing strategy to build up its presence on the south coast.

As at the end of 2013, Sanlam had around £1.9bn assets under management across offices in London, Sevenoaks, Bath, Harrogate, Kirby Lonsdale, Marlow and Newcastle upon Tyne.

Just last week, the firm announced the opening of a fourth office in the North of England, in Teesside, with recruits from Brewin Dolphin.

At the same time it announced the appointment of a further five new investment managers in the North: Sheila Tindle, Stephen Richardson, John Pearson, Mark McMullan and Helen Johnson.
