Liontrust has added Alexander Game to its Economic Advantage team to co-manage four of the firm’s UK-focused funds.

He moves over from the Unicorn Asset Management where he spent almost a decade managing its UK Smaller Companies fund alongside Simon Moon, and the UK Growth fund with Fraser Mackersie. These funds are up 84.4% and 76.6% respectively over the past 10 years.

Game will join the six existing managers on Liontrust’s Economic Advantage team, which is headed up by Anthony Cross, who has been on the team since 1998.

They manage four funds investing across the UK market-cap spectrum. Their UK Micro Cap and UK Smaller Companies portfolios focus on the smallest end, while the UK Growth fund invests primarily in FTSE 100 stocks. The Liontrust Special Situations fund then has the freedom to invest across the entire market.

Given Game’s experience investing in UK equities, Cross said he was a “natural fit” for the team and his “investment ethos is closely aligned to the Economic Advantage process”.

“We have always been alive to the importance of bringing fresh talent into the team to ensure we are well resourced for future growth and development, and we look forward to working closely with Alex when he joins in May,” Cross added.

Liontrust’s UK Smaller Companies and UK Micro Cap fund have struggled of late due to high inflation and interest rates, with each falling 13.2% and 4.8% over the past three years.

Performance of the UK Growth fund has been steadier over the period at 20.2%, while the Special Situations portfolio made a modest return of 3.7%.

Over the long term however, these four funds made returns in excess of 83% in the past decade, with Liontrust UK Micro Cap coming in top at 138.2%.
