Royal London Asset Management (RLAM) has expanded its equity team with two hires to replace fund manager Derek Mitchell who has decided to retire after 30 years in the industry.

Mitchell spent the last decade at RLAM managing the RL UK Opportunities Fund and the RL UK Mid Cap Growth Fund.

He also worked closely with Henry Lowson, lead manager of the RL UK Smaller Companies Fund, who joined in September 2016.

Piers Hillier, chief investment officer at RLAM, said: “We thank Derek for all his contributions in the 10 years he spent at RLAM, and for taking the time to work closely with Henry Lowson since his arrival to ensure a smooth handover.”

Following Mitchell’s retirement, the firm has appointed Craig Yeaman as fund manager and Henry Burrell as assistant fund manager. Both will report to Lowson.

Yeaman was previously investment director at Saracen and manager of the TB Saracen UK Alpha Fund. Meanwhile, Burrell was head of research for the UK Small Cap Strategy at Smith & Williamson.

Yeaman will take over the management of the RL UK Opportunities Fund, previously managed by Mitchell, while Lowson will take over the RL UK Mid Cap Growth Fund with the support of Burrell.

Lowson said: “Craig and Henry are a great fit and will be instrumental to the continued success of the team and the further development of RLAM’s UK alpha strategies.”
