The indices have been launched as an alternative to the existing benchmarks which have become outdated in the wealth management sector and have been designed in association with the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (Step), which will offer them as a new service to its 17,500 members.
They will also be available to all private client portfolio managers who register, allowing them to compare their clients’ portfolios with the performance and volatility of these indices. To ensure confidentiality, the individual investment manager reports will only be available to that member investment manager.
What will be available to a wider audience is the performance and volatility of the indices, produced by Enhance using actual private client portfolio data provided from thousands of live private client portfolios across three risk profiles – low, moderate and high.
The indices are then based on time horizon, volatility and drawdown. For example, the low-risk index is deemed suitable for risk-averse and short-term investment objectives, aiming for volatility of <6% with a maximum drawdown of 10%.
This increases to a ten-year+ time horizon, 10%+ volatility and drawdowns in excess of 20% for the high-risk index.
There will also be sterling, euro and dollar versions of the indices.
Gary Corcoran, group editor of Portfolio Adviser, commented: “These indices will not only provide valuable information to those running private client mandates when comparing their relative performance and risk profile, but also in the design of those portfolios in the first place.”
Richard Sayers, chief executive of Trustee MPI Ltd, added: “We believe that the service will enable investment managers to demonstrate that their performance and risk is subject to third party scrutiny and verification by specialist analysts in association with a global organisation. This should have benefits for clients and prospects of the investment managers as well as compliance and regulation”.
