Martin Currie has hired Michael Millar as an investment manager in its Asian equities team.

Millar joined in September and reports to Andrew Graham, investment director and head of Asia at the group. 

Millar was previously a managing director and regional head of research at Naeem Brokerage, Cairo. He has also spent seven years at Société Générale where he held the roles of director, head of Asia telecoms research, and senior telecoms analyst and deputy head of research, based in Singapore and Bangkok respectively.

Andy Sowerby, executive director sales, marketing and client services at Martin Currie, said: “We continue to see strong demand for our Asian strategies especially the Martin Currie Asia Long Term Unconstrained strategy which was made available in a UCITS structure via our Luxembourg Sicav in 2012. Michael’s appointment is a further senior hire to underpin resource in the team and follows the appointment of Damian Taylor as investment manager to the team earlier this year.”

The group currently run a number of Asian focused funds. It has the £139m Martin Currie Pacific Trust, currently run by Graham, which has generated a NAV performance of 12.9% over three years, compared to the AIC Asia Pacific including Japan Equities sector average of 20.6%. 

The group also has an open-ended fund, also run by Graham, the £88m Asia Pacific fund. This has generated a three year return of 11.3%, compared to a sector average of 7.6%.
