I’ll be home for Christmas… with EQ Investors’ Tertius Bonnin

In a festive series investment experts reflect on an extraordinary year and their hopes for 2021

EQ Investors investment analyst Tertius Bonnin is looking forward to a socially-distanced Christmas in the Lake District and has been tapping into water as a theme ahead of 2021.

What have been your top and worst performing fund picks during the year?

Once again Scottish Mortgage has not disappointed with shares almost doubling year-to-date. On the flip side, the defensive Trojan Global Income has lagged equity markets in the rebound.

What are your biggest over and underweights as vaccine news points towards a return to normality?

We have introduced exposure to water-related industrials across our portfolios as we like the long-term theme and its industrial cyclicality. Energy continues to be a sector as we see headwinds for fossil fuel based companies in the long-term.

Any asset manager you want to highlight for the best lockdown communications?

In my opinion, less has been more. My email has never been busier. I won’t name names…

What parts of the lockdown have made your job easier?

It’s easier than ever to ‘jump’ onto a Zoom as and when is necessary.

What would be your ideal lockdown Christmas present?

Some nice booze to replenish my dwindling supply that has shrunk during lockdown for some reason.

How are you altering your Christmas plans in light of the pandemic?

I’ll be donning walking boots to spend a socially distanced Christmas with my mother in the Lake District.

What has been your most memorable Zoom moment of the year?

A formal whisky tasting event takes the biscuit…very memorable evening.

How are you expecting your office life to look in 2021?

Normal. Or as normal as normal can be post-2020.

What City haunt are you most looking forward to returning to once office working/fund manager meetings return?

It would be rude not to say the Walrus and Carpenter, EQ’s local…

What lockdown movies, series or books would you recommend for people hunkering down during the holidays?

In memory of Sean Connery, it’s got to be the James Bond films.

Tertius Bonnin is an investment analyst at EQ Investors
